I never got to hear you cry,
Or sing to you a soft sweet lullaby,
I never got to hold your hand,
Or plead with you to understand.
I never got to hold you tight,
Then tuck you into bed at night,
I never got to call your name,
To bring you in out of the rain,
My hopes and dreams for you are gone,
But in my heart you will live on.
Precious, tiny, sweet little one
You will always be to me
So perfect, pure, and innocent
Just as you were meant to be.
We dreamed of you and your life
And all that it would be
We waited and longed for you to come
And join our family.
We never had the chance to play,
To laugh, to rock, to wiggle.
We long to hold you, touch you now
And listen to you giggle.
I’ll always be your mother.
He’ll always be your dad.
You’ll always be our child,
The child we never had
But now you’re gone…but yet you’re here.
We’ll sense you everywhere.
You are our sorrow and our joy.
There’s love in every tear.
Just know our love goes deep and strong.
We’ll forget you never-
The child we had, but never had,
And yet will have forever.
I thought of you and closed my eyes and prayed to God today.
I asked what makes a Mother, and I know I heard him say.
“A Mother has a baby, this we know is true”
But God can you be a Mother, when your baby’s not with you?
“Yes, you can”, he replied, with confidence in his voice,
“I give many women babies, when they leave is not their choice.
Some I send for a lifetime, and others for a day.
And some I send to fill your womb, but there’s no need to stay
I just don’t understand this God, I want my baby here.
He took a breath and cleared his throat, and then I saw a tear.
“I wish I could show you, what your child is doing today.
If you could see your child smile, with other children and say…
“We go on earth to learn our lessons, of love and life and fear.
My Mummy loved me so much, I got to come straight he
I feel so lucky to have a Mum, who had so much love for me.
I learned my lessons very quickly, my Mummy set me free.
I miss my Mummy oh so much, but I visit her each day.
When she goes to sleep, on her pillow’s where I lay.
I stroke her hair and kiss her cheek, and whisper in her ear.
Mummy don’t be sad today, I’m your baby and I’m here
“So you see dear sweet one, your children are okay.
Your babies are here in my home, and this is where they will stay.
They’ll wait for you with me, until your lessons are through.
And on the day that you come home, they’ll be at the gates for you
So now you see what makes a Mother, It’s the feeling in your heart.
It’s the love you had so much of, right from the very start.
Though some on earth may not realize, until their time is done.
Remember all the love you have, and know that you are
a special Mum…
Poem 4 – My Footprints
“These are my footprints, so perfect and so small. These tiny footprints never touched the ground at all
Not one tiny footprint, for now I have my wings. These tiny footprints were meant for other things.
You will hear my tiny footprints, in the patter of the rain. Gentle drops like angels tears, of joy and not from pain.
You will see my tiny footprints, in each butterflies’ lazy dance. I’ll let you know I’m with you, if you give me just a chance.
You will see my tiny footprints, in the rustle of the leaves. I will whisper names into the wind, and call each one that grieves.
Most of all, these tiny footprints, are found in mummy’s heart, cause even though I’m gone now, we’ll never truly part.”
She died – this was the way she died.
And when her breath was done
Took up her simple wardrobe
and started for the sun.
Her little figure at the gate
The Angels must have spied,
since I could never find her
upon this mortal side
Come away o human child
to the waters and the wild
with a fairy hand in hand
for the world is more full of weeping that you can understand
I gathered her in all her freshness before a single breeze had damaged her purity
When tomorrow starts without me,
And I’m not there to see;
If the sun should rise and find your eyes
All filled with tears for me;
I wish so much you wouldn’t cry
The way you did today,
While thinking of the many things,
We didn’t get to say.
I know how much you love me,
As much as I love you,
And each time that you think of me,
I know you’ll miss me too;
But when tomorrow starts without me,
Please try to understand,
That an angel came and called my name,
And took me by the hand,
And said my place was ready,
In heaven far above,
And that I’d have to leave behind
All those I dearly love.
Poem 8 – In Our Hearts (adapted by Jean Gifford)
We thought of you with love today.
But that is nothing new.
We thought about you yesterday.
And days before that too.
We think of you in silence.
We remember how you look.
Now all we have is memories.
And your pictures in our book.
Your memory is out keepsake.
With which we’ll never part.
God has you in his keeping.
We have you in our heart.
Imagine a love so strong
that saying hello and goodbye
At the same time
Is worth all the sorrow
There is no foot too small
That it can leave an imprint on the world
Daddy please don’t look so sad
Mommy please don’t cry
Cause I am in the arms of Jesus
and He sings me lullabies.
Please try not to question God
Don’t think He is unkind
Don’t think he sent me to you
And then he changed his mind.
You see, I am a special Child
And I am needed up above
I’m the special gift you gave him
The product of your love.
I’ll always be there with you
And watch the sky at night
Find the brightest star that’s gleaming
That’s my eyes shining bright.
You’ll see me in the morning frost
That mists your windowpane
That’s me, in the summer showers
I’ll be dancing in the rain.
When you feel a gentle breeze
From a gentle wind that blows
That’s me! I’ll be there
Planting a kiss upon your nose.
When you see a child playing
And your heart feels a little tug
That’s me! I’ll be there
Giving your heart a hug.
So, Daddy please don’t look so sad
Mommy don’t you cry
I’m in the arms of Jesus
And he sings me lullabies.
The world may never notice
If a Snowdrop doesn’t bloom,
Or even pause to wonder
If the petals fall too soon.
But every life that ever forms,
Or ever comes to be,
Touches the world in some small way
For all eternity.
The little one we longed for
Was swiftly here and gone.
But the love that was then planted
Is a light that still shines on.
And though our arms are empty,
Our hearts know what to do.
Every beating of our hearts
Says that we love you.
So I will carry you
While your heart beats here
Long beyond the empty cradle
Through the coming years
I will carry you
All my life
And I will praise the one who`s chosen me
To carry you.
The best and most beautiful things in the world
cannot be seen or even touched.
They must be felt within the heart.
Your life was a blessing,
Your memory a treasure…
You are loved beyond words
And missed beyond measure….
All our hopes and dreams,
Now carried on butterfly wings
Poem 17 – To Bless The Space Between Us
Adapted by John O’Donohue
Though your time here was brief,
Your Spirit was alive, awake, complete.
We look toward each other no longer
From the old distance of our names,
Now you dwell inside the rhythm of breath,
As close to us as we are to ourselves.
Though we cannot see you with outward eyes,
We know our soul’s gaze is upon your face,
Smiling back at us from within everything to
Which we bring our best refinement.
Let us not look for you only in memory
You would want us to find you in presence,
Beside us when beauty brightens,
When kindness glows and orchids brighten the earth,
And music echoes eternal tones.
May you continue to inspire us, to enter
Each day with a generous heart.
To serve the call of courage and love.
Until we see your beautiful face again,
In that land where there is no more separation,
Where all tears will be wiped from our mind.
And where we will never lose you again.
